It is focused specifically on mathematics and classical mechanics relevant to future physicians. The material is structured in three main blocks: (1) basic differential and integral calculus together with elements of elementary probability theory and mathematical statistics; (2) mechanical oscillations and waves, including their energy characteristics and simple acoustic applications; (3) the fundamentals of hydro- and hemodynamics, with an emphasis on fluid flow in biological and, in particular, cardiovascular systems. Throughout the text, attention is paid to the formulation and solution of typical quantitative problems arising in medical practice and biomedical research. The present publication has been prepared in accordance with educational programs of higher professional medical education and the model curricula and working programs for the discipline “Physics and Mathematics”. The manual is intended for independent out-of-class study by 1st–year students of the specialty “General Medicine”, including those enrolled in English–language programs. It may also be useful for students of other medical specialties who need to master the mathematical and mechanical foundations required for understanding physiological processes.
